in the evaluation of this graded unit which consists of a self-directed project, with three distinct stages( planning, developing and evaluating) that would be carried out over a twelve-week period, I had started off by choosing my individual project brief that was based upon comparative mythology which is all about the comparison of myths from different cultures in an attempt to identify shared themes and characteristic. the cultures that I had chosen was greek, Egyptian, Norse, Japanese, Christianity and mesoamerican( Aztec) the reason behind that was I wanted to explore a diverse representation of different ancient religions of the world to reflect their differences and similarities. In my brief I had mentioned on the reasoning behind this subject choice was because as an Athiest( a person who doesn’t have a belief any gods or higher power, in any religion) I couldn't comprehend how people throughout history could dedicate their lives to believing in something that doesn't have any evidence to back it up as the evidence that’s been given is very limited. I also believed that choosing ancient cultures, I would have a lower risk of offending anybody with my reasoning. I decided to showcase my project through a series of self-portraits reflecting a selection of gods from the chosen cultures. During the planning stage of the graded unit, I found it useful for me to have a page or two dedicated to the cultural gods as it was easier for me to write a lot more research on the ancient deities and their domains, which resulted in me being able to see the collective information as a whole and make an opinion on it and see the similarities between the cultural, when I was doing that I had realised that the Japanese god culture didn’t link together with any of the other religions so I had to take that out and focus on the other five as they had many gods similar to each other. when I figured out the gods that were similar to each other, I put them in groups based on what they symbolised. After doing that I moved onto what media I could use and work strongly with, I found that really helpful as I was able to score off any art media that I was uncomfortable with using and really focus on my strengths I also gathered imagery research on what the cultures thought their gods looked like and that really helped me figure out what the appearance of my chosen gods later on would appear to be. if I had the chance to do this again, I would probably do further research into the focus point of this project to make it clearer and understandable to others. when I reached the development stage, I used the information gathered throughout the planning to create thumbnails based on the selection of gods that I had chosen. I had tried out different media ranging from tonal, colour pencil and paints. during this point in the project, I had originally started off by creating the drawing from my imagination but soon realised they looked more 2D looking than I had thought out so I moved on to using family members and depicting them as gods and at the beginning of that I felt like this is the route I’m going down however due to the current circumstances I started to run out of space in the sketchbook so I had to move on to A4 pieces of paper and wait for my delivery of an A2 sketchbook to come, which really didn’t leave me a lot of time to complete the developing stage and whilst waiting on my delivery I started getting less motivated on doing portraits of my family members as I didn’t personally think I captured their appearance well so I made the decision to do self-portraits as I knew I had a strength in that subject matter. I had started off by drawing the portraits from mirror image instead of photographs as I didn’t have any god themed props I could use so I just took inspiration from my image research and drawn what I depicted what I would look like portraying the chosen group of gods. If I had a chance to go through this stage again, I would definitely do more experiment drawings with different media just so I had a variety of work to look at, the reason why I was unable to do that previously was that I was running out of art material and I had to result in limiting my use of the material as I wasn’t able to go out to the shops and get them due to the COVID circumstances and I wasn’t able to order a bulk of materials as many products were outside my budget for this project and many would-be dispatched from manufacturers at a very late stage which would leave me rushing my art pieces and I was not willing to take that risk in case it backfired. For my final compositions for the graded unit, I decided to complete 5 A2 pieces of art, each representing the ancient 5 cultural gods. The five gods I had chosen was Hades( Greek),  Anubis( Egyptian), Death/ Grimm reaper ( Christianity), michlantecuhtli ( Aztec) and Hel( Norse) the reason why I chose to base my final compositions on the gods of death was that I believe that death is the one belief that connects these ancient cultures together as that concept is a big element in all religion And in life. In conclusion, I believe that I have completed this project to the best of my ability under the circumstances given but in hindsight, I know that I could have been more cohesive with my work as well as produce a more understandable proposal at the beginning of the graded unit.
